Same thing happened on an Athlon I just finished. It has worked for me in the past, however, with that said, there are some manufacturer's web sites that offer nothing or don't even exist.

Before everyone gives up on these modems, have either of you visited micrmoodem manufacturer's website to see if there is a recent firmware update, or somthing like that.

I ended up just getting a new modem cuz I couldn't get that HSP modem to work with win2k. Probably the first thing to do is make sure that you have the latest drivers, several sites report that Emachines shipped with old, outdated drivers.
